Healing Together, Journeying with Compassion, Standing United for Justice and Accountability

At the heart of Tamil history stands Kannaki of Silappatikaram, whose journey from oppression to divine wrath embodies themes of commitment, justice, and retribution. Her story offers a profound reflection on human virtues and social injustices. In Sri Lanka, both Tamil and Sinhala communities revere her in their own ways—shaped by unique cultural and religious interpretations—where she is known as Kannaki among Tamils and Pathini among Sinhalese.

Drawing inspiration from Kannaki/Pathini’s transformative journey, The Social Architects (TSA) organized a three-day gathering around the Kannaki Festival at Vattapalai, Mullaitivu. The event brought together participants from all ethnic and religious backgrounds across TSA’s nine active districts: Ampara, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Matara, and Hatton—united under the theme:
“Healing Together, Journeying with Compassion, Standing United for Justice and Accountability.”

A space where culture and worshiping is still owned by communities…

Day One: Healing Through Storytelling

The gathering began with a space for participants to share personal stories and reflect on their experiences—as Sinhala Buddhists or Christians, Tamil Hindus or Christians, and Muslims. These sessions were gently facilitated by TSA’s team of psychologists, lawyers, and psychiatrists, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.

A screening of the documentary “HER STORY: Tracing the Pattini-Kannagi Cult of Sri Lanka,” directed by Someetharan, sparked heartfelt discussions. Participants explored their cultural connections to Kannaki/Pathini, reflecting on how a deity rooted in Tamil Nadu/Kerala holds even deeper relevance in the Tamil and Sinhala cultural fabric of Sri Lanka. For many, the film served as a bridge—allowing communities often divided by history, ethnicity, and language to discover unity through shared reverence.

Day Two: Healing Through Collective Action

The second day centered on collective service and cultural expression. Over 120 Tamil and Sinhala participants joined hands in a Siramadana (community service) initiative—cleaning and beautifying a garden space and setting up Thanneer Panthals (refreshment stalls) for devotees visiting the Vattapalai Kannaki Amman Temple, one of the few remaining Kannaki temples in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province.

For nearly all the Sinhala participants, this was their first time witnessing a Kannaki Pooja and its vibrant festivities. The experience offered a rare and powerful opportunity to engage with a cultural tradition unfamiliar to them, deepening mutual respect and fostering a spirit of unity across communities historically divided by conflict and distance.

The group split into friendly teams, cooking traditional Pongal and competing to create the cleanest and most vibrant space. Working side by side—sweeping, planting, cooking, and chatting across language barriers—they built trust and connection, weaving a foundation of shared understanding and unity through simple yet powerful acts of collaboration.

Day Three: Healing Through Celebration

The final day was a time for joyful reflection and cultural celebration. Through music, dance, and games, participants honored their differences while affirming their shared hopes. The performances showcased the beauty of Sri Lanka’s pluralistic heritage and allowed participants to connect through joy, rhythm, and shared humanity.

This three-day gathering was far more than a cultural event. It was an emotionally powerful and symbolic experience—especially for participants from war-affected regions who are still pursuing justice. To stand shoulder to shoulder—Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims—in shared worship and service was deeply meaningful.

Kannaki/Pathini’s story, centered on justice, resilience, and compassion, became a unifying symbol—bringing together diverse communities and inspiring hope for a future grounded in understanding, dignity, and peace.
