TSA organized a three day Filmmaking & Storytelling workshop in Mullativu for youth from districts around the country including Anuradhapura, Ampara, Batticoloa, Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullativu, Nuwara Eliya and Polonnaruwa from the 20th of August to the 23rd of August 2020.

The workshop trained 40 young filmmakers (Directors, Cinematographers, Editors, Actors etc) on their individual projects that included 10 short films, 4 documentaries and 4 street dramas.

The event was also attended by 120 young school children from Mullativu who participated in team building exercises and a session introducing them
to the Arts.

Performers from all three communities also came together to treat the youth to Karagam dances, Polladi and Wadiga Patuna as a show of solidarity and the universality of culture.

The purpose of the workshop was to prepare the youth on their respective content creation projects by providing them with storytelling tools such as Storyboarding, Shot Selection and Budgeting. In addition to technical
knowledge, the youth were also involved with discussions of previously made short films followed by thematic and production based discussions.

The technical assistance was provided by the Vattrapalai International Institute of Arts and Film (VIIAF). The workshop concluded with 18 projects being finalized and confirmed for completion by the end of 2020.

(Can you ride a Bicycle to catch Fish, return Home and play the Lute?) is a short film from The Social Architects that follows the tale of an ailing mother and her four estranged sons, all more interested in establishing their own dominance than in attending to her needs.

The story is told from the point of view of the mother’s caretaker, played by debutante Director S. Rangan, expressing the people’s frustration with the existing political parties in Northern Sri Lanka.

Participatory democracy ought to be founded on the principle of an informed public adequately equipped to contribute actively and meaningfully in the governance of their respective country. If transparency and accountability are the necessities for democratic governance, access to information becomes an essential instrument in achieving this.

Sri Lanka’s Right to Information Act (RTI) was enacted in mid-2016 after a fifteen-year struggle by media practitioners, lawyers and civil society activists. It was operationalized on February 3rd, 2017.

Since the operalization of the RTI, The Social Architects (TSA) have been at the forefront in promoting the use of the law by the grassroots. Street Theatre is an effective means of communication with the rural population. TSA has developed Street Theater Groups based on local issues with the involvement of grassroots communities.

Recently the Colombo youth team and the Ampara Youth for Shared Future (YfSF) collaborated to develop a street theatre using past success stories to disseminate the information on how to use RTI to make local government accountable.

TSA’s youth group performed in Thirukkovil public market, Kanchirankudah village and Akkaraipattu beach in the district of Ampara on the 15-16 March 2020 with nearly 1500 audience. TSA’s core team, along with legal officers, were present to support the communities to file RTI requests on the spot.

Telling stories has the power to change people’s attitudes more than any other form of outreach. Street theatre resonates with an audience in a way that sermons and laws cannot.
Where TSA works, we tap into that potential as we try to change community attitudes towards challenging authority through the use of RTI law
