“The Social Architects(TSA) have been on a quest for peaceful coexistence among different ethnic and religious communities in Sri Lanka since inception. TSA has used many strategies and technics to interpret Peace in a way that means more than just a buzz word. TSA is working with the youth, from Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Batticoloa, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Nuwara-Eliya, and Matara.

In collaboration with fellow South Asians,  around 58 of us, mostly the youth gathered under the banner  “Ahankanali – Silenced Peace” for two days in February of 2020 in Kithulgala to explore if Art can be the catalyst to progress with dignity.”

The loss of life at a young age is a horrific tragedy, but losing a young social activist is a tragedy of epic proportions. It is like axing the primary root of that community.

We, The Social Architects(TSA), are deeply saddened by the loss of our youth activist (Ilaiya Chitpi)  Abdul Rahuman Mohammed Azam.
Azam, born on the 25th of December 2002, is a resident of the celebrated Moor Street in Jaffna and a student of Osmania College, Jaffna. A bright student with a keen interest in community transformation and development. Thus to put his thought into action, he became a member of TSA’s Youth for Shared Future(YfSF).

Facing the world with resilience amid numerous difficulties encountered by his family, he became the president of the student association with an excellent standing. He found TSA’s YfSF as a safe space to share life’s difficulties and joys. Became part of TSA’s regional cricket team and exhibited his talents go beyond the conforms of the intellect.

He has been part of TSA for over a year. Always pushing all of TSA’s Mooththa Chitpikal to push the envelop and be more active in communities to bring about holistic change. He is known for his patience and perseverance.
Unfortunately, the universe had a different plan for Abul. While visiting his family in Eravur, he had gone with his friends and cousins to take a dip at the Kithul river in Chenkaladi in Batticoloa district. Azam, unfortunately, is not a good swimmer and died by accidental drowning on the 19th of January 2020.

Loss of Abul is not only a loss for his family but a significant loss for TSA too. He may have lost his life, but his spirit will live on through the work of TSA’s YfSF.
